BIBLICAL MIND-SETS
Jerry C. Dyer
DOCTRINAL, GENERATIONAL, AND CULTURAL CONFUSION
You look at the list. Please put a check mark beside each of these statements that you believe to be Biblical and do the same beside the ones you believe to be Cultural or Traditional or Parochial . For example: Should you believe that the Bible requires/commands that wives should not work outside the home; you would place a check on the line that corresponds with "Biblical" on question 9:

TO EAT OR NOT TO EAT (I Corinthians 8:1-13) .THATS THE QUESTION IN MATTERS OF JUDGMENT
Three of these mind-sets are clearly identified in the New Testament (one is implied often PWC). Please take time to read the following passages.
ROMANS 14:1-15:7 Receive one(AWC) who is weak in the faith, but not to disputes over doubtful things. For one(PMC & NPMC) believes he may eat all things, but he who is weak(AWC) eats only vegetables. Let not him who eats(PMC) despise him who does not eat(NPMC or AWC), and let not him who does not eat(NPMC or AWC) judge him who eats(PMC); for God has received him. Who are you to judge another's servant? To his own master he stands or falls. Indeed, he will be made to stand, for God is able to make him stand. One person esteems one day above another; another esteems every day alike. Let each be fully convinced in his own mind. He who observes the day(PMC), observes it to the Lord; and he who does not observe the day(NPMC), to the Lord he does not observe it. He who eats(PMC), eats to the Lord, for he gives God thanks; and he who does not eat(NPMC or AWC), to the Lord he does not eat, and gives God thanks. For none of us lives to himself, and no one dies to himself. For if we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord's. For to this end Christ died and rose and lived again, that He might be Lord of both the dead and the living. But why do you(AWC,PWC,PMC,NPMC) judge your brother? Or why do you (AWC,PWC,PMC,NPMC) show contempt for your brother? For we (AWC,PWC,PMC,NPMC) shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. For it is written: "As I live, says the LORD, Every knee shall bow to Me, And every tongue shall confess to God. So then each of us ( AWC,PWC,PMC,NPMC) shall give account of himself to God. Therefore let us (AWC,PWC,PMC,NPMC) not judge one another anymore, but rather resolve this, not to put a stumbling block or a cause to fall in our brother's way. I know and am convinced by the Lord Jesus that there is nothing unclean of itself; but to him who considers anything to be unclean(AWC or NPMC), to him it is unclean. Yet if your( AWC,PMC) brother(AWC) is grieved because of your food, you (PMC) are no longer walking in love. Do not destroy with your ( PMC) food the one(AWC) for whom Christ died. Therefore do not let your (PMC) good be spoken of as evil; for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. For he who serves Christ in these things is acceptable to God and approved by men. Therefore let us (AWC,PWC,PMC,NPMC) pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another. Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All things indeed are pure, but it is evil for the man who eats with offense(AWC). It is good neither to eat meat nor drink wine nor do anything by which your (PMC) brother (AWC) stumbles or is offended or is made weak. Do you (PMC) have faith? Have it to yourself (PMC) before God. Happy is he(PMC) who does not condemn himself in what he approves. But he who doubts(AWC) is condemned if he(AWC) eats, because he(AWC) does not eat from faith; for whatever is not from faith is sin."
We then who are strong (NPMC, PMC) ought to bear with the scruples of the weak (AWC), and not to please ourselves (NPMC,PMC). Let each of us (AWC,PWC,NPMC,PMC) please his neighbor for his good, leading to edification. For even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written, "The reproaches of those who reproached You fell on Me." For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope. Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you (AWC, PWC, NPMC, PMC) to be like-minded toward one another, according to Christ Jesus, that you (AWC, PWC, NPMC, PMC) may with one mind and one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore receive one another, just as Christ also received us, to the glory of God.
I CORINTHIANS 8:1-13: Now concerning things offered to idols: We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies. And if anyone thinks that he knows anything, he knows nothing yet as he ought to know. But if anyone loves God, this one is known by Him. Therefore concerning the eating of things offered to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is no other God but one. For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as there are many gods and many lords), yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through whom we live. However, there is not in everyone that knowledge; for some(AWC), with consciousness of the idol, until now eat it as a thing offered to an idol; and their(AWC) conscience, being weak, is defiled. But food does not commend us to God; for neither if we eat are we the better, nor if we do not eat are we the worse. But beware lest somehow this liberty of yours(PMC) become a stumbling block to those who are weak(AWC). For if anyone(AWC) sees you(PMC) who have knowledge eating in an idol's temple, will not the conscience of him who is weak(AWC) be emboldened to eat those things offered to idols? And because of your(PMB) knowledge shall the weak brother(AWC) perish, for whom Christ died? But when you(PMC) thus sin against the brethren(AWC), and wound their(AWC) weak conscience, you(PMC) sin against Christ. Therefore, if food makes my(PMC) brother(AWC) stumble, I(PMC) will never again eat meat, lest I(PMC) make my(PMC) brother(AWC) stumble."
I CORTHIANS 10:23-11:1: Let no one seek his own, but each one the other's well-being. Eat whatever is sold in the meat market, asking no questions for conscience' sake; for "the earth is the Lord's, and all its fullness." If any of those who do not believe invites you to dinner, and you desire to go, eat whatever is set before you(PMC), asking no question for conscience' sake But if anyone says to you(PMC), "This was offered to idols," do not eat it for the sake of the one(UNBELIEVER) who told you, and for conscience' sake; for "the earth is the Lord's, and all its fullness. "Conscience," I say, not your(PMC) own, but that of the other(UNBELIEVER). For why is my(PMC) liberty judged by another man's(UNBELIEVER or AWC) conscience? But if I(PMC) partake with thanks, why am I(PMC) evil spoken of for the food over which I(PMC) give thanks? Therefore, whether you(ANY CHRISTIAN) eat or drink, or whatever you(ANY CHRISTIAN) do, do all to the glory of God. Give no offense, either to the Jews or to the Greeks or to the church of God, just as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved. Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.
IDENTIFIABLE MIND-SETS IN ANY CHURCH
PROFESSING WEAK CHRISTIAN:
Their list of "Dos" are shorter than Gods list.
We do/can not draw lines to the LEFT or RIGHT of the line(s) that God has already drawn!
For lack of a better term (please help me come up with a more culturally understandable word in our fellowship) I call this person a PROFESSING WEAK CHRISTIAN (PWC) and will refer to this person as such from this point forward in this document.
AUTHENTIC WEAK CHRISTIANS
I call these brethren Authentic Weak Christians; hereafter referred to as AWC.
NON-PARTICIPATING MATURE CHRISTIAN:
THIRD MIND-SET: There are also Christians who are mature but choose not to participate in some activities for their own reasons. We will refer to these as NON-PARTICIPATING MATURE CHRISTIANS or hereafter known as NPMC.
6. IMPORTANT:
PARTICIPATING MATURE CHRISTIANS:
The LAST ONE that is easily identifiable in these passages is the PARTICIPATING MATURE CHRISTIANS hereafter identified as PMC.
(1). I do not want another child of God to "walk that edge" unless they are fully convinced in their mind that they can and want to walk that edge.
(2). I do not want them to be "recruited" with the fervor of an evangelist.
A potential cause for conflict in the body is the PMC who is not careful in the exercise of their liberty. (Lets look at that concept for a moment)
IMPORTANT: Liberty possessed does not have to be practiced.
Trusting that you have a better understanding of the four mind-sets; lets look see how this could play out in a congregation with a specific "situation". However, lets first look at any number of things that could cause tension in a congregation or between individuals who have different mind-sets.
FOR EXAMPLE:
* Procedures in worship (times, how often, variety in procedures etc.).
* Modest/Immodest attire.
* Women's role in the decision making of the congregation.
* Women's leading in prayer in front of men.
* Leadership styles.
* Sunday evening communion.
* Women wearing or not wearing veils in the assembly.
* Invitation at end of sermon (required or not etc.)
* Eating out where liquor is being served.
* Attending movies
* Attire to be worn at assembly.
* Is it essential to have a Sunday School?
* Clapping during worship.
* Raising hands during prayer.
* Special singing groups in the building.
* Multiple cups for communion services.
* Eating in the church building.
* Sending money directly to an orphans home.
Get the point? Theres a lot of things that have created tension. ( I know that I am letting my emotions go when I say...."Don't you know that Satan is happy for the many hours that have been spent discussing and debating these topics? Can you imagine the numbers of people who could have been taught, prayed with and for, visited, encouraged, restored instead of arguing over these items? "
Anyway, lets see if we can come up with something to help each mind-set learn about, be sensitive to, understand, appreciate and approve of the others.
Lets use going to the MOVIES as an issue to work with in our model. On the "we can't do it" side; this discussion usually centers around this: "We can't support an industry that promotes so much sex, violence, disrespect for family and God etc." Recently the movie put out by Disney The Hunchback of Notre Dame is drawing a lot of controversy because of several suggestion of an alternative lifestyle etc. Disney Enterprises is also being boycotted by some religious organizations because of their decision to be very sensitive to the gay community in several ways. People in and out of the Lord's church are having discussions surrounding this general category of movies and the industry. How do you apply the four mind-sets to this issue and work through all of this in the living organism called the body of Christ? Maybe this will help
